County Board Size

The County Board at 38 members is probably larger than it needs to be. The board itself needs to take action now that would address board size after the next census in 2010. If the board waits until 2010 to take up the issue it will be very difficult to reduce the number of their own seats. The county board districts each have a population of about 4300 people at this time. It makes sense for the board to agree now on the approximate population each district should hold and allow the 2010 census to determine how many seats will result. If they pick 5000-6000 people per district then current population projections would put the 2010 board at between 28 and 34 members. It should be noted that the County Executive has no control of the board size however the executive is free to provide leadership on the issue.
